JESUS REVEALED | PART 5: Smyrna and Pergamum

From the very beginning, Christian churches have had to face pressures from without and from within. This week we’ll look at two local churches: Smyrna, that faced suffering because of persecution, and Pergamum, that faced the pressure to conform to the world around them. Join us as we see the word Jesus has for these churches and for us in light of these pressures.

  1. Does your attitude to suffering as a Christian align with Jesus’ attitude to suffering?

  2. Do you love and serve Jesus because he is useful to you, or do you love and serve Jesus because he is lovely to you?

  3. What is the “national religion” in Canada that is at odds with worship of Jesus? How do we resist it and what is the cost of doing so?

JESUS REVEALED | PART 6: Thyatira & Sardis

In Jesus’ message to a couple of churches in Revelation 2 and 3, he sees some dangers that threaten their well-being. In one (Thyatira), it was the danger of being led astray by the false idea that you can compromise on God’s standards. In the other one (Sardis), it was the danger of keeping up the appearance of spiritual vitality but being spiritually dead. This weekend we’ll look at Jesus’ messages with a view to the dangers of false teaching and hypocrisy.

  1. Where are the areas you are pressured to compromise being a follower of Jesus?

  2. Do you resonate with the description of looking alive on the outside but being spiritually dead on the inside? How do you “wake up”?

  3. What do you make of Jesus’ promise, “To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations”?


JESUS REVEALED | PART 7: What Will We Do with the Presence of Jesus? ~ Dr Susan Wendel

  1. How aware are you of the presence of Jesus with you

  2. How can you respond to the invitation of Jesus to walk through the door he has opened into his presence and kingdom?

  3. What are you holding onto for security that may actually be keeping Jesus out? What would it look like to surrender those things and welcome his presence in?

  1. In how many ways is Jesus “worthy” of our worship?

  2. What does seeing the Lamb, alive before God’s throne with the marks of his suffering, mean to you in whatever you are going through?

  3. How would imagining yourself joining the heavenly song around God’s throne change how you worship?

  1. Where do you see “Babylon” in the world around you? Have you bought into it?

  2. What might it cost you today, or in the next few years, to resist Babylon and follow Jesus?

  3. How do you respond to the revelation that Babylon will come crashing down, and it will be sooner than you think?

  1. What in life do you most grieve losing? And what or who that you have lost do you most wish you had back?

  2. How do you think about what you have suffered in life in light of the hope of heaven?

  3. How can you live more for eternity – more generously, more sacrificially – than you would if this life is all there is?
